I finally figured out how to bypass my malfunctioning Picasa account and import my photos onto my computer! Yay!
Below: The view from the narrow little window in the “galley” part of my kitchen (one of these days I'll do the virtual tour of the Chesternest and you'll see how my kitchen can be… difficult to describe, shall we say).
Below: The view out of one of the windows of my non-galley kitchen (yes, there are two distinct rooms in this apartment to which we refer as “the kitchen.” I feel rather ridiculous whenever I'm with Finnabee in the kitchen and I say, “ok, let's go into the kitchen.” Am I confusing this poor child? Will she grow up with major psychological issues related to the ability [or lack thereof] to identify a kitchen or distinguish amongst rooms??). Here I'm looking out across my porch at the garage outside (not our garage; it belongs to the downstairs neighbors. Not that they use it for cars. Although – mind you – with this kind of snowfall, a car-friendly garage would come in handy!). I say: good on you, Garage; way to not collapse. It's been a doozy for ya, lately.
I mention that part of what we're looking at here is my porch (left side of photo). Note the drifts. Note that we're second floor. At one point, we had enough snow on that porch to make a snowman. Maybe next time.
Before I get to this week's links, I want to put out a call to any Manchester-area ladies —
{drumroll please}
I will be hosting the first ever Manchester, NH St. Greg's Pocket get-together this Wednesday morning! I'd love to meet you and have you join if you're in the area! Just log onto Facebook, request to join the Manchester, NH St. Greg's Pocket group, and you can go from there to see the “event” details.
OK. Now for this week's links:
- So adorable! This little girl gets presents from birds! Admittedly, nightingales or whippoorwills or even sparrows would probably be preferable to crows (it must get a bit noisy around their yard, right?), and yet, the trade-off is pretty high to be making friends with wildlife. Just look me in the face and tell me that you have no desire to feed crows after reading that, I ask you.
- A review of Whittaker Chambers' Witness by Fr. C. J. McCloskey: A Man and a Book that will Never Go Away.
- Random but it factors on the moderately interesting/amusing scale: why Fahrenheit is better than Celsius for day-to-day life. If witnessing people getting riled up about obscure, nerdy, and/or petty things in comboxes is your cup of tea, you can also check out the comment section.
- A fascinating story of how nine orphans in Charlotte, NC stuck together: 35 Years later: the Children who Raised Themselves.
- Speaking of which: did you catch the latest Library Project post on Anne of Green Gables, in which Auntie Leila delved deeper in the “orphan” theme of literature as well as other interesting topics?
- And, speaking of large families who do have their moms: How this Mother of Seven Does It.
From the archives:
- A little stroll down memory lane: {p,h,f,r} Deployment Day Edition
- Is your child gearing up to begin the journey of learning to read? Auntie Leila posted on that a while ago. Reading Readiness, Part 1
- You know how much we care about family dinners around here. Dinner together: the First phase, when the children are very young.
Liturgical year:
Some info about St. Hilary, Pope. Also a little about Spring Ember Days in that link.
Don't forget about the ongoing Seven Sundays of St. Joseph! (We definitely missed a week there. Blerg.)
And congratulations to us all, because it is now just one day from March, meaning that December, January, and February are now at an end.
Happy sigh.

And now for the giveaway!
We are delighted to offer Lent At Ephesus, a sublime collection of Lenten music sung by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles.
We didn't quite know what to expect, but after listening last year, we are convinced that this music will be a real grace for your family during the Lenten season. It's meditative, contemplative; the pure sound takes you to a peaceful place where you can encounter God in this time of repentance and preparation.
The world needs good sacred music. Not only do you find that here in a liturgically appropriate collection, but your family will learn by listening a certain way of singing that is fitting for this kind of music, neither too naturalistic nor too dramatic.
Without any sentimentality, the Sisters, living their vocation, have made something beautiful for God.
Here is one track:
Two of our readers can win this beautiful CD! Just leave a comment and we will close the giveaway next Wednesday night.
(Before Holy Week we will give away the Sisters' new Easter album!)

I would be thrilled to win the cd! We’re fortunate enough to hear beautiful, traditional sacred music every Sunday, but do not have enough of our own, at home.
Go Fahrenheit! 😉
Mrs. B. says
It’s lovely how the Sisters have now covered all the liturgical seasons (except perhaps Christmas proper.) I have the Angels and Saints CD, and would love more. I must say that their music has made me hungry for male choirs doing the same thing – anyone knows something good with just male voices? It doesn’t need to be just chant. I think it would be valuable for my son and husband to hear from their side as well 🙂
Beautiful snow pictures! Your building looks lovely, Deirdre. And I’m sure I’m not the only one curious to see an apartment with two kitchens! I wonder if the building was not always divided in apartments, and this is a quirk of such a development…
Jamie says
i would love to win these!!
Claudia says
I have only given these CD’s to others as gifts. Would love to win one of my own!
Barbara says
Thank you for all the great reading on your blog..I am 72 years old and enjoy hearing so much about your family and wonder how you have time to do it all . I have 6 children and 14grandkids and send many of your articles to them.
My husband and I know the priest, Fr. Jambon , who was until recently the chaplain for these Sisters , and got to know about them thru his newsletters. They were also featured on EWTN once and we loved hearing their beautiful voices. I would love having one of their CD’ s to listen to sacred music during Lent.
God Bless you and your family,
Barbara

I love the sisters! We get some of their mailings and I appreciate the opportunity to expose my daughter to a different vocation. We are always sure to include their order in our prayers.
Tori says
That article on Fahrenheit was worth reading for the 100 degree comparison chart alone. I totally laughed out loud. Then my husband had to explain Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin to our 6 yo so she could understand why I was laughing 🙂

That music is beautiful! I’ve been trying to find good sacred music to listen to through things like radio websites or Pandora but I haven’t been very successful so I’m thinking I’ll just need to build up my own collection.
Also, my current (and not deep, spiritual, or profound in any way) Lenten thought is that fasting is considerably easier when one has the flu and only feels like eating toast and potatoes… 🙂
Theresa Anne says
Please put my name in the hat! Thanks!
Meg Cooper says
Amazing music. I liked the Nun’s quote that beauty reminds us that we have a soul.

Thank you for the giveaway opportunity! I finally invested in Advent at Ephesus this past year and it was such a blessing to hear it each night as we ate dinner during that season. By Gaudete Sunday our girls knew which tracks were their favorites and could sing/hum along. I would love to add the Lent CD to our family’s evening routine for this time of year.
