The regular “little of this, little of that” feature here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
This week's links!
Video miscellany:
- For those of you who are interested in astronomy (I know Auntie Leila went there last week, so why not continue the trend?) — or who just like to see pretty pictures, you might be interested in learning about “the largest NASA hubble space telescope image ever assembled.” It's actually such a large image that you can watch a video here that serves to explore the info captured in the still shot. It's a little strange, a little mind-boggling, very pretty, and highly impressive.
- The LMLD family clan got a series of kicks out of this crazy guy's hilarious/wondrous video on archery: there was initial bedazzlement, and then skepticism from some corners as to authenticity… and finally some disillusionment when we came across this critique from what appears to be a more educated and expert source (I will admit that I a] know very little about archery and b] was completely taken in). However, we still stand by the fact that the original video is righteous and worth a watch.
- Perhaps you caught the story about the dog riding the bus in Seattle? If not, it's a fun bit.
Other miscellany:
- This is, without a doubt, one of the best examples of re-purposing furniture I've ever seen: turning an old entertainment center into a kid's kitchen. I'm probably partial to this particular one because of the teal, a color with which, my mom and sisters can tell you, I am obsessed. But I also love that it's the old entertainment center piece, because that happens to be the kind of furniture that you really are likely to find on Craigslist, Freecycle, or the side of the road (in this age of the flatscreen upgrade)!
- I very much enjoyed reading and looking through this exploration of the “perfect” body type over the past century. Of course I've known that beauty standards change, but I had never visualized just how fast that change happens! It's fascinating to think that your body type may be the opposite of what is currently considered “perfection” — and in the next decade, your figure might be the object of envy! Overall a good reminder to be detached about how bodies are perceived in pop culture and the media, and just aim to be healthy and comfortable.
- As reluctant as I am to link to the WaPo, I did really enjoy this article and thought you might too: 5 Ways to let a Little More Risk into your Child's Day (and why that's a good thing). Similar thoughts to the article on the Overprotected Kid that I posted a while ago, but a much shorter read.
- Just in case you skipped over it last week, I'm just throwing “All of my issues with the ‘Goodnight Moon' Bedroom” article in here again for good measure. I just need you to know that it's hilarious.
- In December of last year, Pope Francis gave an address to the Italian Association of Large Families. Just thought you should know, in case you didn't.
- Did you celebrate the 202th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice the other day? I enjoyed this analysis, which presents the dynamics of the two titular flaws in graph form. (from vox.com) I'm not sure exactly how the chart was drawn up – or how one is supposed to be scientific about such a topic – but it's still a fun way to consider the plot line and the characters' development. I was also interested to see that this is explored very much in terms of Lizzie being the proud one and Mr. Darcy being the prejudiced one — does that strike anyone else as a bit simplistic? Amusing nonetheless.
- Some commentary on recent initiatives of our president in the area of family policy: Obama's War on Homemakers.
Some fun items related to The Little Oratory:
- Auntie Leila was the guest on the latest Fountains of Carrots podcast – click through for an hour-ish of Auntie Leila audio!
- We recently came across this little review of TLO and were grateful for Anamaria's thoughts!
Liturgical year:
- This Sunday may be most noted (at least in the US) for being the Holy Day of NFL Obligation, but don't forget that it's also the first Sunday in the Seven Sundays of St. Joseph Novena! You can read past LMLD thoughts on this devotion here and here.
- Monday is Candlemas! Such a beautiful feast! Read about it here and how candles are part of your family prayer life here. The Little Oratory has more about living this and other feasts.

What are the cereal ingredients that you are stirring together in the pics? Looks yummy!

I agree with Cherie! Do tell! I kept expecting to see a link for it . . . looks so yummy.
In high school I wrote a paper on Pride and Prejudice discussing how Elizabeth and Darcy both exhibit pride and prejudice (with ironic effect). I had fun writing it.

Enjoyable, as always!! Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
I’d like to know about the granola, too. No showing food unless we get a recipe! 😉

I’d love to know about the granola too! I thought it wasn’t reading right on my phone, have just come in and no recipe on the laptop either!

Okay, me *five*!
I have been searching for a granola recipe…this might be the one for which I have been looking!
I hope to fold a bunch of laundry and listen to Auntie Leila–while the rest of the world is watching S.B……

That granola looks very similar to the recipe I use from Smitten Kitchen. She uses shaved coconut and dried cherries in hers. I would like to know what recipe you use as well and if you haven’t tried SK’s it is well worth it. Best granola I’ve ever made and my kids devour it!
I love your bits and pieces. This is my favorite blog to read , by far. Thanks for always sharing!

That Goodnight Moon link make me laugh so hard every time I read it! And I’m definitely going to have to share the Hubble Telescope video with my space obsessed six year old!

I have seen so many of those entertainment centers at thrift stores, etc. and every time I see them I ponder what to do with them, some of them solid oak. The play kitchen is really clever! Love to hear some other ideas. Oh yes….”Just aim to be healthy and comfortable!” Common sense in an “obsessed with how we look” world. What a different world it would be if women focused more on “inner beauty” and being “other centered”. Keep up the good work.

If I’m not mistaken, that looks like Auntie Leila’s granola recipe, found here:
