The regular “little of this, little of that” feature at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
{Check out the great giveaway we have for you this week at the end of the post! Regardless of how some of us might still have our heads in late summer, Advent is coming! So today we have something for your little oratory or general Christmas preparation that we think you will love.}
With my off-and-on internet service here in the ‘Chesternest, I have been able to amass lots of articles to read but not as frequently able to share them. Since I was planning to write a {b&p} last week, but was thwarted by a spotty connection (and Rosie had that lovely scarf giveaway to write about, anyway), you may find that my links are somewhat outdated. But I thought they were good ones, so I'm giving you what I've had stored up for a while, even though some of it is a few weeks past the news cycle. I trust you'll forgive me. 🙂
This week's links!
Food:
- I absolutely loved this article from Regina Magazine about a Catholic Way to Eat. Of course, we talk a lot here about feasting in the cycle of the liturgical year, and the importance of meals with the family, etc. I expected this piece to be along the same lines. But I found that it was a refreshing take, with a French perspective (and you know how I love that) as well as a real food perspective. It's thought-provoking but encouraging, and it frequently put a smile on my face as I read it.
- Do you struggle with reheating pizza? I find that it's difficult to achieve a great result: you just want to get back to that meltiness from the night before without drying the slice out! So I enjoyed this bit on How to Reheat your Pizza to Perfection. (I have yet to experiment with this method myself.)
- Here's some interesting info, in interactive graph form, about the different diets around the world. Interesting to see, in an easy visual, how some areas of the world use grains so much more, for example, and how we are the leaders in consumption of sugar and fat (but not by much… lookin' at you, Spain!), as well as other info to… digest (he he). What the World Eats from National Geographic.
General loveliness:
- If you are ready for a very moving piece, I recommend this short but beautiful reflection written by Eric Harkins, the husband of the woman – so many of us heard about her tragic death and were praying for her family this past summer! – who passed away suddenly due to yellow jacket wasp stings while carrying her fifth child. A wife is a gift from God in life, death.
- Let's love on the Eternal City for a little: check out this gorgeous video of footage of Rome from above — truly just a two minute dose of aesthetic enrichment. A reader also sent along this fun collection of crazy vertical panoramas of famous churches and other architecture from Rome. Sigh!
Practical:
- Auntie Leila came across this article from author Charles Murray about the Crucial Importance of Stay at Home Wives. I appreciated seeing this thought captured in a straightforward and concise manner, because I've been brewing about this vaguely for the past few years and particularly in the past few weeks (even before our president's recent
infuriatingcontroversial statement about SAHMs).
- This advice column about How to be the Most Productive Person in your Office – and still get home by 5:30 was fun to read and gave me some ideas. I think much of the counsel is applicable to life in the home or a split home-and-office schedule, as well as a traditional office job.
- A new typeface designed to help the reading process for folks who have dyslexia!
Some serious thoughts in the wake of recent, sad events:
- I thought that this intelligent piece, both highly reasonable and very compassionate, from an experienced nurse, shed a valuable perspective on the sad case of assisted suicide. (Heads up, folks from NJ! Your legislators are making a move in the wrong direction on this topic – get in touch with them!)
- From the other side of the matter, here is a beautiful account of the dignity of all life from a man who worked with severely disabled young people. He learned a lesson about how easy it is to fall for the culture's arguments about “quality of life:” I was There to Serve Them.
- This is a tough one, but beautiful in its prose and in its (unfortunate) truthfulness: Who Will Rescue the Lost Sheep of the Lonely Revolution? A cry out to the bishops from Anthony Esolen.
The Artist and I nearly busted our ribs laughing:
- It's a little late, but I think this hilarious “trailer” about Daylight Saving is still relevant (but not for your littles).
Also:
- It was a fun experience this week to come across a review of The Little Oratory by a young woman who happens to be a friend of mine! Click here to read her quick review and recommendation.
- A dispelling of the myths surrounding Galileo and the Catholic Church: The Galileo Affair.
OK! That was a lot! That should tide you over until the next time, right?

I so wish that the interactive food graph had separated sugar and fat. Of course they can be eaten together, but they are also eaten separately, and good fats are essential to life. It’s stupid to link the two as though they were both harmful elements of a diet.
Deirdre says
I totally agree! And what type of fats are we talking about? Badly processed oil v/s healthy animal fat?? Huge difference. 🙂
Mary Lou says
We are already on our way to Bethlehem to find a ‘bed’ for the little Christchild. Please pray for our travels, it is to be with a beloved autistic nephew who is suffering … He is a real star lighting the way to childlike love Himself ~

Loved the article on the Catholic way to eat and I thought he was right on target on everything except this:
“Why do so many people have trouble controlling their appetites in America?”
“This culture has a rather Puritan inclination: it condemns fun and pleasure all together”.
I don’t know where Daniel Rabourdin lives (and I would love to know where the Puritan ethic has survived in modern America) but I see the opposite – eating is ALL about fun and pleasure rather than taking care of one’s body.
Bridget says
