A little Quackling!
Picture from last week (at 16 weeks, I'm 17 weeks now), in my mom's kitchen. Sigh…I miss it there! |
Have you been waiting for this post for a while? Yeah, we have too. We are overjoyed!
Honestly, there was quite a bit of agonizing over here. And justified agonizing, largely. But suddenly in October it was all–not gone, exactly (I can remember all those feelings oh so well, and can still get my feelings hurt remarkably easily over it), but swept up in a wave of joy.
I keep thinking of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen–“Tidings of comfort and joy!” Comfort seems like a funny word to apply to pregnancy, with all its charming indignities, but! It is comfort from months of anxiety and fear.
(Don't worry, I'm well aware that my child is not the Messiah. I am, however, overwhelmed even more than usual this year at the grace and mercy that is the Incarnation.)
Anyway, some specifics…I am due in the middle of June. I am astonished at how much nicer the second trimester is than the first. For now, we are calling the baby Dino, which is a pun with our last name, alluding to the Jurassic creature.
The last few months have been a haze of morning (hahaha) sickness, insomnia, and fatigue. I'm not telling you this as a complaint, really…we are thrilled to be expecting. I just want to tell anybody reading this who might be waiting for a baby, that I have been praying and offering it up for you, by name where I was able. I know my wait is FAR from the longest anybody has suffered. If it's been longer for you, I pray it will end very very soon. If it's been shorter, I pray that it will end soon and you won't have to wait as long as I did!

Congratulations!!! What wonderful news. I hope the rest of the pregnancy goes just as smoothly as the 2nd trimester! Oh and June is a wonderful month to have a baby, my firstborn came in June and I loved being able to take him outside often in those early days when the weather was nice.
ellenjohnson824500384 says
Congratulations! I'm due with my second a week or two after you! I'm glad your days of waiting are over. 🙂 We had to wait a while before #1 came along and a little less for #2. It's excruciating and worrisome when it takes a while but it definitely makes you appreciate what a true gift children are.
_Jessica says
Congratulations, Suki and John! Y'all have been in my prayers and I'm so glad to see this! You are a beautiful mama, Suki! God bless you all!
Anne says
God bless you and your husband, Suki! We had long waits for babies 1 and 2, and now we have 5 (1 adopted). If I could go back to myself during those painful years, I would tell myself to focus on the joy of my little family and to trust in God's plan and timing! So easy to say now… I was trying to do those things at the time… Anyway, such wonderful news, and you are just so cute in your pregnant state! 🙂
Sukie says
Thank you, Anne! And of course, SOME of the agonizing is not justified, and I knew it at the time but had a hard time with it anyway. God is good!
Annalisa says
Hooray!
Amy M. says
Congratulations!! As much as I appreciate the Dino Sour pun (I love a pun and not just the good ones), I think I like the pet name Quackling even better 😀 Every blessing for a healthy and happy pregnancy and delivery!
Sukie says
Thanks! I didn't think of “Quackling” til I was writing the post (I don't actually call John that in person), but I do like it now! Maybe I'll stick with it on the blog…if I can handle a pseudonym FOR a pseudonym. 🙂
(As for the first part of your comment, I edited my post a little, but I'm glad you appreciate the pun!)
Kerith says
Awesome! We too, are expecting in June! This after experiencing 3 early miscarriages in 2013. My 1st trimester was rough, as well, so the 2nd trimester was a welcome relief! Congratulations!
Sukie says
Congratulations, Kerith! I am sorry for your losses. I will be praying for a healthy pregnancy and baby for you!
Terri says
Suki, I have been waiting and praying for this announcement! I know it must have been difficult with your sisters having babies and feeling left out. I had three miscarriages in between my two oldest girls which made for a very stressful pregnancy but getting into the second trimester should ease your mind. I rejoice with you and please pray for me too! I am trying for number 5 and it's taking longer than I'd like. I love that tunic you are rocking in the pics…it looks like something from Boden (??).
Sukie says
Thanks, Terri! I will certainly pray for you.
Yup, the tunic is from Boden. I got it on sale in the early days of my pregnancy–it's not maternity, and I started showing a lot earlier than I expected to, so I'm afraid it won't last me as long as I'd hoped!!
Amy M. says
I didn't include it in my congratulatory comment, but I am so glad I'm not the only person who can pick out a Boden tunic at a distance 🙂
Dixie says
Oh, congratulations!! How wonderful! I am due at the same time with our second. God bless you three!
Sukie says
Congratulations to you, too!
Lindsey says
Congratulations! May God's comfort and joy continue throughout the rest of the pregnancy. 🙂

Woo hoo! Congratulations! Your words and photos radiate joy.

Congratulations! How well I know the wait, the fear…all of it. Happy to say we're parents to five with us here, now! I pray a blessedly complication-free pregnancy, labor, and delivery for you!

Jenny says
Congratulations!
“The last few months have been a haze of morning (hahaha) sickness, insomnia, and fatigue. I'm not telling you this as a complaint, really…we are thrilled to be expecting.”
Let me tell you as someone who experiences pregnancy as one misery after another (perfectly healthy miseries, but miseries nonetheless), complaining about being pregnant and being thrilled about being pregnant are not mutually exclusive. So complain away! Find someone who knows what pregnancy misery is and confide all your woes with her. If someone says, “oh I felt a little nauseous for like a week or so,” just smile, nod, and walk away. 🙂
My youngest was born this past June and it is a great month to have a baby. Not too hot yet, but warm enough at night that being awake at all hours is not such a chore.
Sukie says
Thanks, Jenny! And don't worry, I DO complain in person, and ignore people who say that loving babies has to mean loving everything about pregnancy! I just mean that I wouldn't complain in an existential sort of way, you know?
Lisa says
I am so happy to hear this news! Congratulations! I had big “morning” sickness in all my pregnancies. To get out of that period of time is such a blessing. I had a hard time accepting the non-stop horrible feelings (in my pre-faith days). Mary is there for you! Peace!
Tess says
Hurray!!! We are so thrilled and happy for you three! Sending lots of love and prayers from Chicago!
Sukie says
Thank you, Tess! We are so excited for you guys, too. Stay warm!

Congratulations!! Wonderful news!

Praise God for this joyful news. Prayers offered for a peaceful remainder of your pregnancy, a safe delivery and a healthy baby! Mary our Blessed Mother pray for Suki and family.
Libbi says
Can I add my name to the prayer list? 5 years and counting… Congrats to you though!
Sukie says
Thank you, Libbi! And I have added you to my list. God bless you!
Rebekah says
I'm so happy for you! We, too, had to wait– two and a half years– but ah, the joy of seeing that little heartbeat on the sonogram!
Martha says
Congratulations!!
I know how that feels…we were only waiting seven months, but it felt like it was FOREVER – and of course, all the well-meaning folks who inquire, inquire, inquire. I remember laying in bed at home praying, “is this my cross? really?? THIS one??”
After that wait, my entire pregnancy felt like a joyful dream – I was just so excited to be a mother! And it has even affected me now that she's here: I never have the temptation to see her as anything less than a marvel. Because fertility is not quite as abundant in our marriage, I can even be grateful for a stubborn toddler (which she certainly can be).
Congratulations again, and many prayers for a safe pregnancy, and a quick and easy labor.
Julie @ These Walls says
Wonderful news! Congratulations! What a tremendous blessing in the form of such a tiny little thing.
Anna says
Congratualations Suki! My first was born in June. I still remember that day in October when we found out we were pregnant. And then we went home for Christmas and I sported the tiniest of baby bumbs for my overjoyed parents.
So this post brought to mind joyous memories for me. So happy for you.
Annie says
Wow Praise God! I was wondering, and I was praying for you. You can pray for me too. Haven't been married that long in the grand scheme of things, but long enough to start to wonder.
Sukie says
Thanks, Annie! And yes, I will pray for you!
Bernadette says
Ditto on all of the above comments! 🙂
Lacy says
Congratulations!.
Cary says
Congratulations! So, glad this part of the wait is over for you, as many of us understand how hard that is. Then there is the new wait – to meet your little Quackling. 🙂 We are expecting our first grandchild at the end of May and anxiously wait, too!

yippee! Congratulations- Auntie Leila must be thrilled, too
CaMama says
Congratulations! Now descending to absurd trivia. My husband and I were puzzling about the phenomena of very tall men marrying short women. I mean, we know an unusual number of couples with large height disparity. My son who is 6'4″ is dating seriously a girl who doesn't even come up to his armpit (which I guess makes cuddling easier). My dad is 6'2″ and my mom, 5ft; my short sister and her husband are well over a foot apart too. My average height sisters married men of average height. None of my brothers made it to 6ft and they married women closer to their heights. I'm 5'7 and my husband is 6'. All our tall male friends are married to shorties. Our older sons are all taller than my husband, dwarfing him in fact, and our younger sons look like they are going to be well into the 6 ft side as well. Our daughters are average, all a bit shorter than me. Anyway, I think we'll apply for a grant and study the matter. It should be as contentious as our temperment question (i.e. “He could not possibly have inherited that annoying sanguine temperment from ME!” “Oh yeah, well I'm melancholic, so it's not my fault!”). Hearty congratulations again!
_Leila says
CaMama — it seems true! I feel so guilty that my two short daughters got such tall men. Sorry tall girls!! (We'll see what happens with Bridgie, and Rosie is a bit taller than average.)
Sukie says
CaMama, I love it! I will be awaiting your full repot.
I do seem to see lots of couples with large disparity, but I have assumed it was just because I am hyper aware, being 16″ shorter than my husband! And yes, like my mom, sometimes I feel guilty for having “stolen” a tall man. (To be fair, though, it should be noted that Rosie's husband IS also tall. )
MAT says
Waiting is so very hard and lonely. I'm sorry you had to experience that. Tho well intentioned, every well wish for pregnancy just seemed to bite. For me and my husband, I think the wait did bring us closer. And, complain away but enjoy the special time for just the two of you!
You look so lovely and you are just the cutest!
Anna V. Price says
Congratulations! That is super exciting. As a June baby myself, I must say June is the very best month to be born 🙂
Hope all goes well!
Kelsey says
Such happy news! Many congratulations!
Ruth says
Congratulations, a new baby is always wonderful news! 🙂 It is hard to wait and wonder so I am especially pleased for you!
For those who are still waiting, I will include you all in my prayers. Please do the same for me – we are almost 9 years hoping for a third baby. Please pray for us as we try to live God's will with grace and joy, thank you.
Sukie says
Thanks, Ruth! And I will pray for you.
Cammy says
And please pray for all those for whom the wait was never over, or wasn't over in the usual way. Thank you, God, for the blessing of adoption and the miracle of babies born of someone else. Years and years later, though, I still well up when I'm with a group of mothers sharing their pregnancy and birth stories. I imagine it's even more difficult for those who couldn't adopt.
God bless you and your lovely, growing family!
Sukie says
Thank you, Cammy, and I certainly will pray for all those people. Thank you for the reminder! God bless.
nancy says
Congratulations! Your post offers encouragement to a lot of women I am sure. We are also expecting a granddaughter the first of June. Life is good.

Congratulations and Best Wishes! So very happy for you! I will be redundant and agree with previous posters, you look beautiful, radiant, happy, and cute! Waiting, worrying, answering well meaning questions, being happy for sisters, etc, all very painful. Blessing and Prayers for you, Sheryl from Puget Sound
kimberlee says
Hooray and Deo Gratias! I'm so very happy for all of you! (and you look so super cute!)
Jessica says
Congratulations, Suki! What a blessing. I know what it's like to wait for a baby (4.5 years so far here), but I'm sure it is even harder when your sisters are having babies. I'll be praying for a healthy pregnancy and healthy Dino!
Sukie says
Thanks so much, Jessica! I will pray for your long wait to be over soon!
Jessica says
Actually, we recently decided to adopt (after many years of thinking and praying). The adoption process can be long, but at least we can see the end in sight now. One to two years is much easier to wrap my head around than indefinite waiting and hoping.
mebarrett8 says
Congratulations! This is such wonderful news, God bless you and the wee one.
Woman of the House says
Congratulations! Wonderful news! I just found out my second grandbaby is on the way, due in July. It will be easy to remember to pray for you and your baby because I will be praying for my daughter and her baby as well.

Congratulations! I am due with #6 at the end of June. I hope your pregnancy goes well.
Melissa says
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!
Amelia says
So wonderful! Very glad that your agonizing is over! We were borderline-agonizing before we found out our first (now ten months old) was on the way, even though it only took five months, so not so justifiable there but I can't imagine if it took over a year. Oh, and I showed early, too. I loved it because clearly pregnant tummy is cute but my bloated tummy that I got first, not nearly as much :-).

Congratulations!

God bless you and the sweet baby growing under your heart 🙂 Trust in the One Who gives good gifts! Blessings from the Last Frontier!
LIbby Jane says
Oh, the charming indignities! What an apt description, Sukie! Congratulations! For me, the work of pregnancy has been worrying and giving it up again and again, trying to be anxious for nothing, and needing very much clinging to God to find peace.
Peace and joy and robust health to you and yours!
Betsy M says
Congratulations! You look so adorable with that little bump.
Kathia says
Congrats!! Prayers lifted up for a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth for you and your Quackling! 2014 is a good birth year (we are due on May 10th). 😉

Joyous news!! I never had fertility problems, but knowing the joy that children bring, I can only imagine the pain of infertility. My heart hurts for the couples who suffer this way. I am so glad that you have passed out of that valley of fear and uncertainty. You look so radiant and the bump is beautiful! You will continue in my prayers.
CMerie says
Congratulations! So exciting for you! You look great!
Also, it must have been very nice to be home with all of your family in one spot. The house is filling up with babies once more! 🙂

Congratulations! Would you please keep my friends, the O. Family in prayer? They are awaiting a birth family to choose them for adoption.
Sukie says
Thanks, Tara! And yes, I will pray for your friends.
Emily says
Suki, I must have been sharing prayers with you! I had 19 months of secondary infertility, and it's a special, sweet sadness to live in a culture of life and not be able to conceive. Sorry to be so forward, but I just had a feeling that you may have been struggling with all those other announcements coming so regularly. I am so happy that God chose to end that cross (and give you another!). My second daughter was born 8/28, and I wish she could meet the “twin cousins!” All the best to you and your husband.
Emily G says
Congratulations, Suki! I'm very happy for you both that your wait is finally over. A summer baby sounds lovely. All mine are fall/winter babies. I often think of how fun it would be to see their precious little arms and legs bare-I always have to keep my babies bundled. Weird, maybe, but I try to enjoy everything and every moment about babyhood.
Mrs. Pickles says
Yayyyyyyyyy!!!!!!! *happy dance*
Kim says
Congratulations on your good news!
Perhaps I am unusual, however I don't assume that no baby less than 2 years after marriage is a sigh that there are difficulties attaining pregnancy. I believe that the timing of children is a very personal matter between husband and wife. There are more than a few people who choose to spend several years together as a couple prior to growing their families.

I overlooked this post!! CONGRATS!!
