I am sure that one of these days I'm going to misspell “pieces” in the title of the post. It's only a matter of time…
Most people avoid that kind of error by sticking to the simple rule: ‘i' before ‘e,' except after ‘c…'
But imagine if your name was Deirdre and the very word to which your identity was bound defied this rule! Despite being trained to care deeply about grammar, spelling, syntax, and usage, this lesson never sank in with me.
Lots of people misspell my name ‘Dierdre,' undoubtedly by force of habit in handling the tricky ‘i'/'e' relationship. It's complicated.

Between The Artist and me, we have six brothers and three brothers-in-law. I've been trying to keep up with sending birthday cards, but it's not my greatest strength (at least, being timely with cards isn't my greatest strength). And while I like to hand-craft cards, it's hard to find designs that are fun (and fun to do) but not girly. I found this design and I've been using variations of it, as we happen to be in a brother-birthday time of year:
As I mentioned before, I don't currently have a camera. So the big desktop Mac is subbing… |
I adapted this idea from this image, which I found through a google search. You know what they say… “a good artist borrows; a great artist steals…” |
Anyway. On to this week's bits & pieces!
- If you're looking for a way to introduce students — or maybe yourself — to fallacies in logic, you'll be able to make good use of this fun story, “Love is a Fallacy.” My favorite line from it: “…and stop shouting. I think shouting must be a fallacy too.” Then if you want to review, there's a bit of a worksheet to go along. As a philosophy major, I really should have known all of these by heart… But I enjoyed the review.
- This flickr member has an impressive nature table to share! Roll over the image for info spots.
- For a little Holy Week-specific reflection on fairy tales, check out this article. (In order to enjoy it, you'll probably need to be open to a flexible definition of ‘fairy tale…')
- If you're not already familiar with the pro-life ministry And Then There Were None, here is a great introduction: Day of Exodus 2013. The group, which focuses on helping abortion clinic workers leave the abortion industry, is organizing an ‘exodus day' to draw attention to this effort and help workers believe that leaving is possible. This movement fills me with hope! Let's pray for a huge exodus from clinics!
Have a blessed Holy Saturday and a lovely start to the celebrations of Easter!
