The “little of this, little of that” feature from Like Mother, Like Daughter!
This week's giveaway is for a hand-woven scarf from the Connected in Hope foundation!
Connected in Hope kindly sent me one to review, and while there were many lovely scarves to choose from, I'm a sucker for that particular shade of blue. Can not resist it. (You can see me and my ears-askew piggy modeling my new scarf above). It's a beautiful soft cotton, and you can tell it's hand-woven… in a good way! I've been wearing it all the time, now that it's finally (!!) starting to cool off here and feel more like Fall.
What makes these particular scarves so special, though, is that not only are they beautiful themselves, but they are hand-woven by women in Ethopia and sold by a non-profit foundation with a beautiful mission:
“Our goal at Connected in Hope is to empower these women to lift their families out of extreme poverty through sustainable income development. We train and employ vulnerable women to create high quality products (scarves, baskets and leather products) that are marketed here in the United States. We pay the women up front for the products and then re-invest 100% of the profits back into programs that benefit the women, their families, and the community.”
Interested in learning more? I loved reading about the great work this foundation is doing with these women and their families. You can read all about it on their website.
Connected in Hope is offering one of our readers the scarf of her choice — just use the rafflecopter widget at the bottom of the post to enter, and we'll announce the winner next week!
If you want to get a head start on your Christmas shopping for the deserving women in your life (in my opinion, a lovely scarf is always a welcome gift, but I've decided that they're an especially great gift for a new mom — instant wardrobe-refresher when it feels like nothing fits, and bonus built-in nursing cover!), Connected in Hope is also offering Like Mother, Like Daughter readers 10% off all their scarves — just enter the code LMLD10 at checkout!
And now for a few links! (Not many today, but we had a bunch of good ones last week if you need to catch up!)
- We mourn the sudden passing of Helen Hull Hitchcock. She was an example of that kind of woman spoken about in Proverbs: Devoted to her family, she also gave of herself to the community — in this case, who knows how far her reach went. In an effort to be a voice for the woman in her role as wife and mother, she created Women for Faith and Family. On the WFF site, among other things, you will find many treasures to help with your quest to live your faith with your family. We highly recommend it.
- Did you get a chance to listen to Pat Gohn's interview of Auntie Leila at Among Women? Follow the link to listen to the podcast, and while you're there, there's still one day left to enter the giveaway for a signed copy of The Little Oratory!
- I've been plugging for this video to be included in {bits & pieces} for weeks, but I guess if a girl wants an obscure music nerdy video posted, she's got to do it herself! It's a video of a German singer demonstrating overtone singing — essentially, singing two notes at the same time.
I found it amazing — it's the clearest demonstration of musical overtones I've ever heard. But if the concept is completely new to you, don't be discouraged if you can't hear what she's doing right away. Keep listening, and watch her hand during the demonstrations — it will help you pick out the moving notes! (My college conductor referred to this phenomenon as “bassoon fingers.” If you're watching an orchestra play, you have no idea what the bassoon is playing; you just hear a lot of music. But if you pay attention to the bassoonist's fingers, all of a sudden the bassoon line pops out! Magic!)
If you don't have time to listen to the whole thing (or you're like my mother and can't handle five minutes of this woman's weird singing), try starting at the 4 minute mark, and listen to her sing a folk song in two parts.
And now, the giveaway for a free scarf from Connected in Hope!
(FYI, you are asked for your email *only* so that you can be contacted if you win! So do not fear the “registration.” If you are entering the drawing with a comment, don’t forget to come back up here and click on the Rafflecopter thingy to get your entries!)

Yes. A tiny bit creepy. 😉
Rebekah says
Tiny bit creepy? I thought it was very creepy. My dog was whining!! I then had to look up various methods of overtone and throat singing. I never knew this thing existed. Very interesting, but 30 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. Ha!

I’ve heard Tuvan throat singing before, but this was crazy-amazing! I found I could hear her overtones more easily when I turned my volume up. My kids complained about their ears ringing afterwards. 🙂
