~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~
Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
{pretty}
I got curtains up in the dining room! In the eat-in kitchen, too, but no picture of that yet. (I put some up in our bedroom months ago, because I'm really on top of things. The rest of the windows are still waiting with their bare blinds for a little lovin'.)
I was just playing around with my camera when I took this photo, not really thinking of it as a “curtains” shot. Otherwise I would've fixed them so they didn't look like a three-year-old has taken it upon himself to open them first thing when he wakes up every morning. Which, of course, he has. Not that I'm complaining!
Curtains are hard. Such a commitment. So much mental energy. But I do try to get them up, even if they can't be perfect — to me, it makes the room feel so much warmer and lived-in. I feel like I've really committed to a space when I hang curtains in it, and I only have so long to commit to a space before we have to start moving out again.
Otherwise I'd totally procrastinate longer.
{happy}
Two days after I took this photo, we had a big ice storm here, during which I learned that there is such a thing as ThunderSleet.
Mostly, though, it's been feeling a lot like spring.
{funny}
Give her time. She will be a worthy opponent before long.
{real}
Oh wow. That's one big little wrinkly foot! She would stay in the bath forever if I let her, and would come out looking like this all over.
(We called this phenomenon “hot dog toes/fingers” in our family. Is that a thing? Or do you call it something different?)

Stephanie in Germany says
We call those “raisin feet”!
Lindsey says
I think we called them raisins as well! My two year old was quite puzzled by this phenomena after his most recent bath. 🙂
Gail says
“Pruney feet” here! All of your pictures made me smile this morning.
Betsy says
Pruney feet here, too!
Ellen says
Curtains do make such a happy home, but you’re right, they are an easy thing to procrastinate on.
Ellie says
We said they looked like prunes!
Natalie H says
Us too! 🙂
Betsy M says
Granny toes! Funny, I thought that word was maybe in the dictionary. 🙂
Oh and I am very impressed with your curtains. Beautiful. I am trying to decide on curtains for our new house and am feeling overwhelmed. Good thing that I am in the country and few people drive by – I don’t even have shades up in the guest bedroom!
Rebekka says
Prunes.
Leane says
Love your photos. The first one is very homey and looks like a lovely place to sit, eat and chat!
Love baby toes! And little boys swinging!
Mary Virginia says
Curtains are my least favorite thing about creating a home! They’ve added so much to our main floor and need to commit to our bedroom windows! 🙂
Amy Caroline says
We always told kids that when you got the wrinkly fingers and toes it was time to get out because they were turning into fish. Goodness, when i say it here it sounds kind of scary! I assure you, it causes many giggles.
Erica Aljets says
Your space looks so inviting, it makes me want to sit there and have a hot cup of coffee (I AM from Seattle…so coffe is the obvious choice here) :)…Also, where did you get your curtain rod? I’m not sure where to get extra long ones, I have windows similar to yours. Thanks!
Rosie says
Erica, it’s from Ikea!
Erica Aljets says
Ooh yay, thank you, Rosie!
Lucy says
Prunes here, in england.
Lisa G. says
Rosie, there’s no reason to be apologetic about the curtains – the photo and the room look so breezy and inviting! The blinds, the light – everything. It looks like summer, actually; and here in CT there’s a snow flurry out my window…
Love the sword-wielding baby!
Divina says
What a bright, sunny, and cheery dining room! As are your little ones!
briana says
The curtains are beautiful! There were custom curtains in our house when we bought it and now, 3 years in, I am not liking them so much. So I really get that Curtain Decision being a very hard thing.
Pippo is getting so big. And she is too! I would swear you just had her. Very cute raisin toes.
Virginia says
What a sweet little warrior princess! Love your dining room chairs, BTW.
Sarah says
I find Country Curtains really good for curtains….and that is coming from Australia where I have to pay international shipping! Just check their clearance range:)
I like the hotdog fingers and toys. We say they are all “wrinkled up like a prune”. It is a reference to a Beached Az Episode (its on Youtube – season 1 episode 3) where the baby whale says he “only swims in 15 minute intervals of he gets all wrinkly”….the seagull answers “like a prune”. I guess we watched it long before we had children and it is just one of those lines that sticks in the brain!
Jenny D says
What a gorgeous tiny foot. My little boy came out of his bath and said ‘my fingers are twinkled!’ I’m sure he meant wrinkled, but we loved twinkled so it stuck!
Rosie says
I love twinkled too!
Michele says
We call them “pruny” but I kind of like “hot dogs”. Those curtains are lovely! Did you make them? Such a warm color!
Rosie says
Michele, they’re from World Market, several years ago. They have such pretty curtains there, and for quite reasonable prices – considering that who even knows where you would find such pretty fabric to make them yourself!
Bridget Green says
I love that picture of the baby with the foam sword. My baby girl prefers her brothers nunchucks, but her older sisters both love swords and one has her own light sabers.
Amy says
Raisin fingers!! And I totally get you about the curtains – my husband constantly reminds me about the kitchen curtains….We took the old blinds down months ago and I was supposed to make pretty new ones to replace them. The fabric is chilling in my sewing room…..
Harmony says
Rosie, I love your curtains. And that whole picture of your house. Your house looks so grown up, well-kept, and inviting…. sigh… how do you do it?! (Also both photos of your kids are great 🙂
Rosie says
Harmony, you’re very encouraging! And the morning light is flattering. 🙂
Charlotte says
Your curtains are inspiring me to take a new look at my windows. Hmmmmm… Did you sew them?
Rosie says
Not these, Charlotte — they’re from World Market!
Anastasia says
Your house looks so lovely. And clutter free!!! How do you do it? Seriously. We are constantly clearing out and donating things, and I can’t seem to get one room in the house to look clutter free 🙂
Love those kiddos.
Rosie says
Anastasia, you are too kind! Seriously. That photo is… not representative, at least in terms of clutter. There just aren’t many places to put things in the dining room!
Kristen says
We call them granny hands (and feet). Funny, I had just assumed that’s what everyone called them.
Laura Catherine Hanby Hudens says
Hello. I just found your blog. It is delightful. I can’t wait to poke around some more. I also blog from whatkidsarereading.wordpress.com. I’ll be linking up from there next go around. Thanks for hosting such a lovely link up.
Woman of the House says
Oh, those toes! Too sweet! They look like raisins. lol Your curtains are so pretty. I’m glad you have such a good helper to open them every morning. 🙂
