I put her down so I could brush my teeth before bedtime, and came back to this.

Did you know, I'd never seen real, live mistletoe before! But it's all over the place around here. I understand it's not very good for the tree, but since this is the only one in our yard and it's too high to reach, I allow myself to love it.
It's so much more exciting than fake mistletoe, because you never know when you'll be out and about and stumble upon (underneath?) some. “No, really, you have to give me a kiss now. For real.”
{real}
How many times have I photographed those little chickens? So many times! And each time it means rigging up a little photoshoot using baby blankets, table linens, random pieces of furniture, and all sorts of other things. All done within a narrow window when the pretty sunlight coincides with naptime. (This particular setup, captured by my phone somewhat after the light had passed and the babies woken up, produced the header photo — along with a few others that we reserve the right to pull out if the occasion demands it.)
Then email photos to opinionated mother and sisters, discuss ad infinitum.
Repeat.
At this point, I'm actually pretty good at taking photos of little chickens, if I do say so myself. Practice makes perfect!

You do take great pics of the chickens! I just never realized it took so much work to make a studio and photograph them. And I love your new design by the way.

I so love the chickens, thank you for your hard work. I know it seems like a lot of work for such a small thing, but it’s a big comforting thing to readers like myself. Thanks!
Lindsey says
I have never seen real mistletoe either! That’s kind of fun to have around. 🙂 And nice work on the chickens, too.
Kate says
I love the picture of your gorgeous babies!
We had a similar experience to yours with the mistletoe when we were driving to N.Carolina. DH and I looked around as we drove past fields and were amazed – “I think that’s cotton!” we said to each other. Pretty wild for a couple of northeasterners.

You did a great job with the chicken photo, it looks perfect in the header!
Your babies are soooo cute! It looks like you have a brown eyed boy and a blue eyed girl too! I was happily surprised when my third baby, 1st girl, came out with blue eyes after two brown-eyed boys 🙂
And I have never seen real mistletoe either! Cool!

First, all of the formatting problems look fixed to me! And the feed! Looks great!
Also, as I recall, someone in your family received the perfect implement for harvesting mistletoe. At least that’s how it worked when I was growing up.
Virginia says
Yep, that’s how you do it. But, then you get it down and its five times larger than you thought it would be and you have to figure out what to do with a piece of mistletoe the size of a sofa cushion.

I love your photos, and the mistletoe is fun isn’t it!
Mary says
LOVE the new place! And those eyes! And the chickens look LOVELY 🙂

What a pretty baby!
I guess I never thought about how mistletoe grows. I would be stealing kisses all the time. Maybe you should plan a little picnic right under that tree if the weather is nice enough. 🙂
Julianne says
“No, really, you have to give me a kiss now. For real.” That had me cracking up!
Anne says
ohh! cute Molly pictures!! look at those eyes! And those chubby little wrists!!

I LOVE the new look!

You are a master at photographing chicken. A master!!
I just love those babies eyes. So sweet and wonderful. I miss that stage of life. I truly do. Babies rock!
Rosie says
haha, thanks, Mary!

First off, is there a way to send out an announcement via your old URL that you have moved? My feedly did not direct me here; I had to come looking because I know Thursday means pfhr and I miss it when I do not see it 🙂 I’ve updated my feedly to your new address, but plenty of other people who use readers of some type may not have found you yet. Just a thought!
Second, is there a story behind the chickens? I’ve been a regular reader for at least two years and have read lots out of the archives, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard why they were selected for the LMLD logo/mascot/spirit animal. Do link (or tell)!
Rosie says
Amy, I know – because of the way the switch happened, we need to make sure everyone who’s getting the old feed knows how to find us. (I’m working with the woman who helped us with the technical side of things to make this happen!) I’m glad you did!
As for the chickens, they’re Christmas ornaments of my mom’s that ended up in our header and then somehow just stuck! No real story, but we do think they’re adorable and sort of appropriate, so we’ve adopted them as the blog’s own.
Molly says
Mistletoe is the state flower of Oklahoma!
Rosie says
Really? Well that makes sense, then!
Misty says
Beautiful new fonts and clean look. Love it!
Woman of the House says
Sweet, sweet children! I like the new blog. The pictures of the chickens are great! So happy they are still are part of things.
Anne-Marie says
When I lived in Germany, the outdoor markets sold fresh mistletoe at Christmas. I overheard the following exchange between a customer and the grizzly stall-keeper:
“How much for this bunch of mistletoe?”
“Five Euros.”
“What? That’s way too much!”
“Fine then, don’t buy it, and _you_ climb up in a tree with a scythe.”
Mistletoe, btw, is toxic, especially for children.
