The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
Well, it is refreshing to log on here to do a little link-lovin'! I have to dig a little to come up with some photos for you, now that I'm back in our DC(ish) home without the ole' camera…
Here's what I came up with. The apple cake I made for the brunch celebrating Suki's birthday back in December!
I used the recipe from smitten kitchen. As far as I can remember I followed it faithfully, although I didn't use macintosh apples (sorry, I don't remember what kind I used).
It was ridiculous. So very good.
Glad I chose to photograph it at the time! Even if my angles aren't the most exciting… you get the idea. I looooove me some apple cake!
This week's links!
- Well, if this Russian example is not encouraging for home gardening, I don't know what would be! I can't wait until the Artist and I live somewhere with a plot of land I can put to such great use.
- My mom points us in the direction of this Weigelian commentary on Pope Francis from the First Things blog On the Square.
- Dawn, Suki's college roommate and friend, makes the latest Terrence Malick film sound like something we'd like to see. To the Wonder and the Fecundity of Commitment — Are you planning on seeing it? This article also from On the Square (yes, we like On the Square… in fact, you can even dig up a few reviews by yours truly there! :).
- Speaking of Stuff We Wrote and Pope Francis, we of course recommend the latest by my Papa, LMLD's “the Chief” himself!: A Call to Serve: Pope Francis and the Catholic Future. It's full of lots of coffee-table-worthy, large photos and, of course, insightful commentary. You can pre-order now!
(If you can't see the link above, open this page in a different browser or go here.)
- Suki came across the perfect b&p item: one blogger's account of how she and her friends have a communal bits and pieces dinner night: F Friday! Suki points out that all we need is a neighborhood, and we'll be on our way to this, An Impromptu Party Idea for All Ages from the Kitchn. A “bits and pieces” dinner with a social aspect!
Have a great weekend, everyone! I hope that your forecast for the coming week is as appealing as ours (yay breezy spring clothes! So much easier to get into with a belly!)!

I love the link on Russian gardens! I spent some time in Moscow fixing up orphanages as a college student and even in the orphanage they managed to carve out space in one of the sadder sections to grow more cucumbers and parsley indoors than I'd ever seen in my life or would care to eat again–it made up a large portion of their meals. We often drove past the dachas which, in the areas we were in, were pretty much just little shacks but the gardens were amazing and really beautiful. I can't wait for my family to have a plot of land of our own too!

Can I just say that Saturday is becoming my favorite LMLD blog day! Right down my alley. I could blog like this every day (if I ever sat down to pay attention to my blog!)

We live in a rental and this is the year I plan a”real” garden. The space is a little small and I was having doubts. Thanks for the inspiration.

Every time I see the “The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature at Like Mother, Like Daughter!” line at the top of these posts I start singing the Anatevka song from Fiddler on the Roof – “a little bit of this, a little bit of that…” :o)
Can't wait to get your Papa's book – it looks wonderful! Incidentally, I heard him on a Catholic Answers podcast not long ago, and really enjoyed listening to him, and not only because his accent tickles my southern ears! Very smart man, your Papa.

My husband is Romanian- even during communism- when both sides of the family lost their large swathes of land to the government (but still had to farm them and then send the wheat to Russia), he ate very well from the small kitchen farms that everyone had in the villages
of course- he had to eat seasonally- there is no such thing as a fresh tomato for Christmas!

The Impromptu Party Idea reminded me of the great get-togethers my husband and I attended every Friday in the summer when we lived in the Washington DC area. And you don't even need a neighborhood! One genius Mom came up with the idea and it went on for 3 or 4 years. It may still be going on now, but I'm not sure because the Mom who orchestrated it all moved back to Michigan, where she is most certainly hosting fabulous socials now.
She called the get-togethers 3 Martini Playdates (3MP) and here is her own explanation:
As summer begins again, I constantly have this daydream: I envision myself with good friends, in someone's backyard, with a balmy breeze in my hair and the stars beginning to twinkle, a drink in my hand…
…until one of my children screams “MOMMYYYYYYYY!” which reminds me that I might be able to steal ONE evening like that out the summer. Friends will hug and say to e/o, “It is SO good to see you! Why don't we see e/o more often?” YES, the reality that we are all spread across the Wash., DC area and have kids, lives, and would really love to see each other more often…
…So I have decided to do something about it. (I refuse to be defeated by “sprawl and crawl”!) I am proposing a standing happy hour/playdate (“Three Martini Playdate”), every Friday of this summer. The objective is to get together and live as FRIENDS, who see e/o often, know what's going on in e/o's lives and whose kids know e/o. And for goodness' sake, I need a drink at five o'clock!!!
My idea is that people are free to start heading over to my house at 4PM and stay until the kids' bedtime (or leave whenever you want before that). Just bring a drink to share. We can hang out in the backyard and let the kids play and run thru the sprinkler. Moms/Dads can trickle in as they leave work. (We live walking dist. from the Forest Glen Metro, so anyone coming home from work on the metro can walk on over.) If people stay thru dinner, we can order pizza. I'll host next week and others are welcome to sign up for the following weeks.
